Progress Update on the Turkey Soup Kitchen Project
On February 6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey, prompting the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to initiate the Turkey Soup Kitchen Project, aimed at providing assistance to 10,000 individuals. Upon learning of this endeavor, the Taiwan Red Cross (TRC) generously contributed $700,000 to support the project.

On March 27, 2024, representatives from IFRC, Turkey Red Crescent, and Taiwan Red Cross convened to discuss the progress of the Turkey Soup Kitchen Project. Following the identification of a suitable location by the Turkey Red Crescent, it was decided that the kitchen would be established in Osmaniye, with the capacity to support 6,000 residents of the nearby container city.

This project seeks to alleviate social deprivation, enhance quality of life, and restore dignity by providing hot meals to those in need. While some residents of the container city are capable of cooking for themselves, others face challenges due to disabilities or other circumstances. Once the soup kitchen is operational, staff members will prepare meals and deliver them to the city for distribution.

According to the plans outlined by the Turkish Red Crescent, construction of the soup kitchen is currently underway, with efforts focused on selecting a suitable construction company and finalizing tender documents. The soup kitchen is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. Regular meetings, held every three months, between IFRC, the Turkish Red Crescent, and TRC will ensure ongoing updates on the project's progress.
